“Merry Christmas to Me” was written in the sweltering July heat of a trailer park in northern Portugal. Seriously. The band had a few days off in a row on a festival tour so we parked the bus at a campground and spent our days eating leftover dressing room snacks and baking in the hot sun. My guitarist Ryan Spraker and I had been thinking about writing a Christmas song for a while at that point. I always felt that the holidays had a certain melancholy feeling about them, especially if you were alone. We were on tour a lot then and away from loved ones for months at a time, which I think led us to the idea writing a lonely Christmas song. We do sound hopeful at the end, however. Right now we certainly all hope “next year will be better.” - Eli Paperboy Reed
